STEM Best Practice Workshop onJanuary 11 at at Housatonic Community College

Any and all learning institutions and individual educators interested in adopting best practices in STEM education are invited to attend a Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway workshop at Housatonic Community College (HCC) on Saturday, January 11. The workshop is the first in a series of three that allows an institution to certify as a Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway Partner.

For schools, institutions and educators currently offering STEM instruction, the nationally acclaimed program offers a roadmap to achieve advancement. Through a collaborative approach, current practices are transformed through self-evaluation as part of a continuous improvement process. The model fosters thinking about long-term strategic goals, helps identify principles of quality STEM education, and provides a process for creating a practical plan for improvement.

Educators not currently practicing STEM instruction are also invited to attend the workshop as an opportunity to learn best practices in STEM education and to chart a course for success.

Earlier this year HCC offered this workshop to area educators with remarkable results. Due to its popularity, and recognizing the need for strong STEM competencies among students, the workshop is being offered again.

“I was very excited to be a part of the first cohort of the Carnegie STEM Pathway Training, the opportunity to learn and gain a better understanding of the four pillars of STEM in this environment was very helpful,” said Gwendolyn Brantley, Greater Bridgeport STEM Ecosystem Lead with United Way of Coastal Fairfield County. “I also had the opportunity to share my knowledge and experiences on how I provide STEM enrichment to my students with my peers in my own community.”

The workshop will take place Saturday, January 11th from 9am – 3pm at the Beacon Hall Event Center on the HCC campus, located at 900 Lafayette Blvd. in Bridgeport, CT. The cost is $150, including all materials and lunch. Those interested should contact Dean Robin Avant, RAvant@Housatonic.edu or visit http://bit.ly/HCCSTEMTraining for additional details and to register. The deadline for registration is Monday, January 6, 2020.

Housatonic Community College is the only community college in the nation that is a certified Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway Provider. At HCC students can choose from over 70+ associate degree or certificate credit and non-credit options. Adding Arts to STEM learning, HCC hosts an annual two-day STEAMfest event, offers STEAM research trips and plans to open a STEAM Center of Excellence next year. Additionally HCC is a co-leader in the Greater Bridgeport STEM Ecosystem.
