For “egg-cellent” decorating fun with a seasonal theme, try your hand creating these gold-flecked, painted wooden eggs! In many cultures, the egg represents new life, fertility and rebirth. Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates back to the 13thcentury.

According to the White House Historical Association, “the first annual White House Easter Egg Roll was held on April 22, 1878 after President Rutherford B. Hayes agreed to open the White House grounds on Easter Monday to children who want to roll Easter eggs.” The tradition has continued for over 100 years, with reluctant cancellations for World War I, World War II, the Truman White House renovation project which closed the South Lawn from 1948-1952, and the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic. (As of this writing, it is not known if the event will take place in 2021.)

The Wilton Historical Society’s “Egg-cellent” Egg Decorating Kit was inspired by another historical White House event. In 1981 President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan hosted a hunt for wooden eggs that bore the signatures of famous people; subsequently, wooden eggs became the official White House Easter Egg Roll keepsakes.

Created by Museum Educator Katherine Karlik, the Wilton Historical Society kit includes three unpainted wooden eggs, two types of paint, paintbrush, gold flecks (not edible!), moss and a nest. Instructions included. Suggested for adults and children ages 8 and up. $15 per kit, supplies limited.
