Last week, Wilton High School students had the opportunity to attend an art reception in the Little Gallery at the High School. The reception complete with music and cookies showcased the talent and creativity of students who are finishing off their fall semester classes in advertising, graphic design, photography, drawing, painting, fashion and ceramics.
It is nice to give the students an opportunity to share their work with the school community and a great way to bring the school community together' said Sue Brandt, photography teacher and fine art instructional leader at the High School.
Work on display included garments constructed out of paper, digital animated artwork displayed on iPads, and photography inspired by a visit from the Wilton Fire Department.
Some of the art on display is portraits students have created as part of the Memory Project. The Memory Project is a non-profit organization that helps children living in difficult situations to understand that they are valued by connecting them with other children around the world by means of art. Wilton High School drawing and painting students created portraits of eleven children in Nigeria, a country where there are more children out of school than any other country in the world. When received, the children's teachers will present the portraits as gifts to reward the children in their studies, letting them know that youth around the world are cheering them on. 'It is a great thing to be a part of' said Mrs. Kounnas, 'It conveys a message that other people see you and value you, you are not invisible. The portrait could be one of only a very small number of possessions that these children own.'
