Wilton Resident Russell John Cancro, 88, has Died

Russell John Cancro, 88, of Wilton, longtime resident of Fishkill, Yorktown Heights and Ossining, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 27, 2020. He was the loving husband of the late Joan Marie (DeSimone) Cancro.

Mr. Cancro was born on December 16, 1931 in the Bronx, NY a son of the late Louis and Nancy (Manopoli) Cancro. He graduated from DeWitt High School served in the Korean War. Later, he earned his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green University and his graduate degree from Columbia University.

Mr. Cancro was a retired New York City Public School History Teacher. He was a proud member of the NYC United Federation of Teachers. Mr. Cancro also was the owner and qualifying broker of Cancro Realty in the Bronx for over 40 years.

In his spare time, Mr. Cancro enjoyed skiing, gardening, photography, art, travel and fine dining. His philosophy on life was to “always be curious”. He will be remembered for embracing life with great enthusiasm, taking risks, having colorful conversations about politics, the New York Yankees and many other topics.

Mr. Cancro is survived by his “greatest accomplishments in his life”, his three children; John and Lisa Cancro of Taos, NM; Dr. Joanne Cancro and Charlene Allen of Boston, MA and Susan and Dr. Michael Kullman of Waccabuc, NY. In addition, Mr. Cancro is survived by his grandchildren, Alexandra and Olivia Cancro and Jack Durkin; his sister, Johanna Cancro and her husband, Alfred Kottman; his sister in law and brother in law, Mary Ann and Frank Greco as well as his nieces, nephews, friends and many colleagues.
