First Selectwomen Vanderslice and Pemberton speak at Ms President US Session

Ms President US had their second meeting on Friday, October 23. Avery Newcomer, a Wilton High Schooler, led the icebreaker to get everyone excited on Zoom. She arranged an energy ball activity where the kids would explain what their energy ball would look like and then pass it on to someone. This was a fun activity to get the girls into thinking about the session.

There were two amazing guest speakers, Lynne Vanderslice who is the First Selectwomen of Wilton, CT and Julia Pemberton, the First Selectwomen of Redding, CT.

Hersha Chauhan, the first Ms President US who is now a Junior at Ridgefield High School, interviewed the two guest speakers. The girls learned a lot from the wonderful speakers, as they talked about what their jobs are and how they are important to their towns. They also talked about how their experiences in middle and high school led them to where they are today and how they are involved in the most important local issues today. Participants were inspired by these two strong female leaders and even got a chance to ask some of their own questions.

Sometimes it is tiring sitting in front of a screen. While taking a stretch break, the participants learned some karate moves from Kavya Anand, a junior at Ridgefield High School. Kavya’s stretch break was followed by the last small group activity, where the girls split up into groups and discussed what issues mattered to them. They came up with some great ways to improve their towns and considered important issues in today’s world like protecting the environment, healthcare access, coronavirus reopening plans and more.

Ms President US will have many more meetings throughout the year, expanding young girls’ knowledge about the government and inspiring them to pursue their future leadership goals. Ms President US, Inc. is dedicated to motivating and preparing girls to aim for the highest civic leadership positions. For questions or more information, please contact info@mspresidentus.org.
