Yesterday, the CDC issued new guidance on outdoor mask wearing for fully vaccinated residents. Fully vaccinated is defined as two weeks after your second dose of Pfizer or Moderna or your one dose of J&J. As of the morning the Governor had not changed his executive order on mask wearing, though he did indicate the State would follow this CDC guidance: "You can gather or conduct activities outdoors without wearing a mask except in certain crowded settings and venues". Wilton Assessor Sarah Scacco was appointed to the additional position of Tax Collector following the retirement of Wilton’s long-time tax collector Phil Damato. During her three years with the Town, Sarah has focused on modernizing the Assessor’s Office. She will continue that focus in her new role as Manager of Assessment and Taxation. The Town has been working in partnership with a number of organizations to design, permit and construct the removal the Strong Pond Dam, better known as the Merwin Meadows Dam. Save the Sound is the project manager. Over the next two weeks residents should expect to see signs of work including,
- Installation of temporary construction fencing to prevent pedestrian access to the site.
- Cutting of six trees from the river right dam embankment along with minor brush as needed.
- Placement of a gravel tracking pad on top of the river right dam embankment for construction vehicle access.
The project is part of a multi-town, multi-dam removal plan. Once completed, fish will be able to travel 14 unobstructed miles from Long Island Sound. Water quality will be improved as the area will be clear of any contaminated sediment captured behind the dam.
Once again, the Town is facilitating the state sponsored CT Neighborhood Assistance Act (NAA) Tax Credit Program, which allows Connecticut businesses to receive state tax credits equal to 60% or 100% of their donation to an approved non-profit's project. This is the Town's 4th year with the program. In prior years, several Wilton non-profits have received donations. Any Connecticut business, not just Wilton businesses, can make donations to the approved non-profit projects. Learn more here.
Absentee ballot applications are available for the Annual Town Meeting adjourned vote on Saturday, May 15th. Information on applications is available here. The Annual Town Meeting itself will be held on Saturday, May 8th at 3:00pm at the Auditorium of the Clune Center. Requirements for indoor mask wearing will be enforced. If you are new to town or have never attended the Annual Town Meeting, as per the Town’s Charter: The Town Meeting, at the Annual Town Meeting, shall consider the recommendations of the Board of Finance, and may, by amendment made and seconded, and approved by those in attendance, reduce (but not increase) the Board of Education's total recommended budget; individual line items in the Board of Selectmen's recommended budget; and the debt service recommended appropriation. The Town Meeting may not authorize any appropriation for any purpose which was not requested by either the Board of Education or the Board of Selectmen nor recommended by the Board of Finance. The Town Meeting may not reduce any proposed appropriation (the "proposed appropriation") below that amount equal to the legal obligation of the Town nor reduce the employer's pension or other post-employment benefits contributions below the actuarially calculated annual required contributions.
