At 89, this Meadow Ridge resident is a force to be reckoned with - meet Susan Auslander

It’s not every day that a local resident is the subject of a feature story in the New York Times. Meadow Ridge dweller Susan Auslander, 89, is no ordinary senior citizen.

The Bronx native was one of the first three women admitted to Fordham Law School. She’s a force for good and as she nears nine decades on this Earth, she’s not resting on her laurels.

Auslander wanted West Redding’s Meadow Ridge to invest in solar panels and proved that persistence and grit sprinkled with a good share of kindness wins.

According to the New York Times, “She joined the residents’ buildings committee, and noticed that one of the facility’s biggest expenses was electricity, which cost more than $1 million a year.”

Auslander took it upon herself to form a solar committee at Meadow Ridge and, for several years, attempted to work with management, to no avail. It was in 2021 when Meadow Ridge changed management companies, that Auslander finally saw an opening, and took it.

She finally will get the solar panels powered up.

According to the New York Times, Meadow Ridge recently announced plans to erect 1,344 solar panels over two parking lots and the roof of one building in the complex, an action that is expected to offset 607.2 metric tons of carbon each year.
