Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You’re IT, Painted Cookie!

Three questions with Susan Schmitt, owner of The Painted Cookie.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business because I loved decorating cookies! I had been out to the workforce for 16 years and I needed to return to work. I had just turned 50 and wasn't sure who would hire me after being unemployed for so long. So we (our family) made the decision for myself to become a Cookie Bakery Owner.  Because we were putting in a new bakery kitchen we decided to become the first Nutfree Cookie Shop in our area. We celebrated our 5th year in January and looking forward to expanding our cookie offerings this summer.

Best selling product/service?

Best selling product is our custom designed sugar cookies. Very close second is our Nutfree Chocolate Covered Oreos.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

We love Southern Yankee Monogramming for our aprons, vests and table runners with our logo.

The Painted Cookie is located at 196 Danbury Road. Visit them online here.

Why Small Businesses Matter first launched in Ridgefield in early 2018 when Jeff Konchalski, owner of Nature's Temptations suggested putting a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community, Jeff wants to stress the importance of shopping and supporting everything local.
