Saturday, May 4 Free Comic Book Day, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. All over America, kids and adults will celebrate Free Comic Book Day on Saturday Mary 4, 2019. A tradition that started in 2002, on the first Saturday in May, local comic book stores donate comics to libraries to give away. Cave Comics in Newtown has been a loyal sponsor of this program at the Wilton Library for over 10 years, donating a great variety of free comics for Wilton's children. Sunday, May 5, 19 & June 2 STEM Club for 7th & 8th Graders, 2 – 3:30 p.m. This club lets students in grades 7-8 explore the world of STEM through hardware projects such as an LED light-box, motion sensor light strip, brushbots and more. Monday, May 6 Author Talk: Tyler Kepner — K: A History of Baseball in 10 Pitches, 7 – 8:30 p.m. From New York Times national baseball writer Tyler Kepner comes K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches – a deep dive into the stories, stats, folklore, and nostalgia behind America’s pastime told through vivid anecdotes and insights examining the fastball, the curveball, the changeup, the slider, the cutter, the sinker, the splitter, the knuckleball, the screwball, and the spitball. Kepner has found that pitchers almost always love to talk about their craft: eighteen of the twenty-five pitchers with the most strikeouts in the history of the sport have shared their perspectives with him, including Nolan Ryan, Steve Carlton, Bob Gibson, Randy Johnson, and Pedro Martinez. Tyler Kepner, who lives in Wilton, started covering baseball as a teenager, interviewing players for a homemade magazine that was featured in The New York Times in 1989. He attended Vanderbilt University on the Grantland Rice/Fred Russell sportswriting scholarship, then covered the Angels and the Mariners. He joined The New York Times in 2000, covering the Mets for two seasons, the Yankees for eight, and serving as the national baseball writer since 2010. Q&A will follow the talk. No charge. Taylor has invented and developed a way of playing the guitar that is admired and often imitated by guitarists all over the world. Wednesday, May 22 Colombia: Light at the Edge of the World with Daryl Hawk, 7 – 8 p.m. International documentary photographer and explorer Daryl Hawk will give a special photography presentation and lecture based on his most recent expedition to the northwestern provinces of Colombia this past March. Hawk embarked alone on a 1600-mile journey that started in the city of Cartegena and followed the highest coastal mountain range in the world – the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Range. His adventure culminated in the vast Guajira Peninsula which has some of the most rugged and spectacular desert landscapes in Colombia. La Guarija is home to the Wayuu indigenous people, who have maintained their independent way of life through the centuries. Mr. Hawk was there to shoot a documentary for magazines. He will share his nonstop, day-to-day adventures, experiences, discoveries, and valuable lessons he learned on this incredibly spiritual journey. Registration is strongly recommended. Thursday, May 30 Motets, Madrigals, and Masses: Sound and Culture in Renaissance Europe, 7 – 8:30 p.m. The popular, local musicologist Gil Harel presents an engaging program of Renaissance music in conjunction with the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci. Modern musicologists often point to the mid-15th century as a turning point in the history of European art music. During this program, Professor Gil Harel (PhD, Brandeis University) will discuss three genres of Renaissance music: first, the motets and masses which represent the spiritual nature of this period as well as the madrigals which reflect the poetic and secular in life. Gil Harel is a musicologist and music theorist whose interests include styles ranging from western classical repertoire to jazz. Currently he teaches at Naugatuck Valley Community College where he was presented with the 'Merit Award for Exemplary Service to the College'. At NVCC, Dr. Harel conducts the college chorale, a cappella ensemble, teaches music history and theory, and serves as musical director of theater productions.
