Tuesday, Sept. 10 Author Talk: Anne Gardiner Perkins - Yale Needs Women: How the First Group of Girls Rewrote the Rules of an Ivy League Giant, 7 – 8:30 p.m. In the summer of 1969, young women across the country sent in applications to Yale University for the first time. The Ivy League institution dedicated to graduating ‘one thousand male leaders’ each year had finally decided to open its doors to the nation's top female students. The landmark decision was a huge step forward for women's equality in education. However, this first class of women found themselves immersed in an overwhelmingly male culture they were unprepared to face. Yale Needs Women, an unflinching account of a group of young women striving for change, is an inspiring story of strength, resilience, and courage that continues to resonate today. Anne Gardiner Perkins attended Yale University, where she earned her BA in history and was the first woman editor-in-chief of the Yale Daily News. She is also a Rhodes Scholar and completed a BA in modern history at Balliol College, Oxford University. She has spent her life in education, from urban high school teacher to state-level policy maker. She received her Ph.D. in higher education at UMass Boston and has presented papers on higher education at leading conferences. Q&A will follow the talk.  No charge.  Registration highly recommended. See the library’s registration link for more details. Books will be available for purchase and signing courtesy of Elm Street Books, New Canaan. Saturdays, Sept. 28, Oct. 5 & 12 A 3-part Series on How to Read James Joyce with Mark Schenker, 3 – 4:30 p.m. Mark Schenker of Yale College will present three lecture-discussions on how to appreciate Joyce’s own method of detouring—of using indirection to find direction—in the writer’s presentation of the extraordinarily rich dimensions of everyday life. With an overview of Joyce’s method in Dubliners (1914) and A Portrait of The Artist as a Young Man (1916) as a foundation, Dean Schenker will give close attention to 'The Dead' and provide a brief introduction to how the method is extended in Ulysses. Over the course of the sessions, participants will gain an appreciation of how Joyce’s symbolical realism enables readers to see both what is present and what is hidden in the author’s texts. Mark J. Schenker has been at Yale College since 1990 and is currently a senior associate dean of the College and Dean of Academic Affairs. See the library’s registration link for more details about the program and the speaker. Each lecture will be followed by a Q&A session. Wine and cheese will be served afterward for those who wish to stay for refreshment and further discussion. No charge for the program. This lecture is made possible with the support of the Literary Series in Memory of Amy Quigley. Advance registration recommended. Register online or call 203-762-6334.
