Wilton Police Department Participates in Blue Envelope Program to improve communication between police officers and people with autism spectrum disorder.
"We are proud to announce our participation in the Blue Envelope Program. The program was created for drivers who are on the autism spectrum. The Blue Envelope, which the person with autism may place a license, registration and insurance card in, contains information to enhance communication between the police and a person with autism," Wilton Police said on their Facebook Page.
In the event of a motor vehicle stop or crash, drivers can present the Blue Envelope with their license, registration, and insurance information to our officers which will let us know the driver is on the autism spectrum.
According to CT DMV, the purpose of the envelope is to have the driver place their insurance card, registration and driver license in it, so they can hand it to the officer during a traffic stop. On the outside of the envelope is helpful tips and instructions for both the officer and driver on how to successfully communicate with each other.
The envelopes are available at all DMV locations, police stations, driving schools and through autism advocacy groups. Yes, you can have multiple envelopes.
