Wilton Police Department conducts unannounced compliance inspection of the Mohegan Smoke Shop

On February 15, Wilton Police Department partnered with the State of CT Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and the Department of Consumer Protection in conducting an unannounced compliance inspection of the Mohegan Smoke Shop located at 14 Danbury Rd. Wilton, CT, an establishment our department had recently received information on that multiple underage youth were purchasing tobacco and other products from.

Under the direction and supervision of DMHAS investigators, an underage youth entered the establishment and attempted to purchase tobacco products. The underage youth was able to successfully purchase a nicotine vape device from the clerk at the store. The clerk was cited for Illegal Sale of a Nicotine Device in violation of C.G.S 53-344b(b).

While at the store, it was observed by investigators that the store was displaying for sale multiple products that contained THC compounds that exceeded .3 percent THC on a dry weight basis, in violation of CT law. Many of the products were packaged in a manner mimicking popular youth snacks. The items in question were seized by the Wilton Police Department while the investigation continues.

In a recent press release Attorney General Tong warned that, "Illegal look-alike cannabis products pose a unique health threat to children, who may unknowingly ingest high doses of potent psychoactive chemicals. The safe serving size of these cannabis look-alike products is small. Children who accidentally eat an entire snack-sized bag of “chips” or “candy” may be exposed to more than 100 times the maximum adult serving."

Thank you to our community for providing actionable information and our partner State agencies for their assistance in making our Wilton community safer, especially for our youth.
