Senator Harckham To Hold Food Drive in Carme

New York State Senator Pete Harckham will be holding a food drive from 12 p.m. (noon) to 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 12 in the parking lot of the Drew United Methodist Church, 28 Gleneida Avenue, Carmel Hamlet, NY. Click here for a map.

“With winter approaching and the Covid-19 pandemic spiking again in the area, economic uncertainty is causing more hunger insecurity here in New York and across the United States,” said Harckham. “The generosity of neighbors helping neighbors with donations helps fill the need in our communities, so I am hoping those who can will stop by with some food or bag of groceries and make a difference—right here in Putnam County.”

Along with members of his team and a group of volunteers, Harckham will be collecting food for the food pantries of the Gilead Presbyterian Church in Carmel Hamlet and of the Putnam Community Action Program, both of which will help feed some of the neediest members of the Carmel community, including many seniors.

Harckham has held seven food drives in the past few months—one each in Sleepy Hollow, Peekskill, Mount Kisco, Mohegan Lake, Brewster, Bedford and Pleasantville—and collected over 30,000 pounds of food items and $10,000 in cash donations so far. Hundreds of residents from the 40th Senate District have volunteered to help at the food drives as well—“a real grassroots show of support,” said Harckham.

Please note: This will be a “Drive-Thru, Drop Off” event. No food will be distributed; it will only be collected. Volunteers wearing face masks will collect the food from the car. There is no need to get out of the vehicle.

If you are interested in donating shelf-stable food, the items most needed include:
