Somers Library Adult Programs for December

Virtual:  Alan Sklar Reads Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas in Wales." Monday, December 7,  7:00 - 8:00 pm.  This funny and touching short story is an anecdotal remembrance of a Christmas from the viewpoint of a young boy, portraying a nostalgic and simpler time. Join us as Alan Sklar, professional narrator, corporate spokesman and actor with years of experience, reads this classic tale.

Virtual Program:  Jazz, an American Art. Thursday, December 10, 6:30-8:30 pm.

Jazz was born in America, evolved along with the young country in which it took its first breath, and became our gift to the world. This lecture covers the history, styles and some major contributors to jazz. We'll talk about the components which are common to all eras, as well as those which are unique to a particular style. We'll compare the elements found in both jazz and classical music (where the two worlds overlap!), gain a deeper understanding of what makes jazz tick, and listen to many examples. Toe-tapping will be unavoidable. Join us!

Virtual Presentation: Christmas Traditions. Saturday, December 12, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm. In this new hour-long presentation, presenter Kevin Woyce will use original photographs, vintage images, and live music to explore favorite Christmas traditions, from the first Christmas to "A Christmas Carol," "White Christmas," and the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. He will also explain how historical figures ranging from Saint Nicholas, Martin Luther and Queen Victoria to Charles Dickens and Thomas Nast helped shape the way we celebrate the Christmas season.
