A Message from the Town of Yorktown Supervisor

From the desk of Supervisor Matt Slater:

New active caseload by municipality was not released today due to a computer glitch.  While I understand the desire for residents to know how many active cases are in our community we have learned active cases is not a true metric to understand community spread.  We continue to advocate for the release of infection rates by municipality and remain committed to working with our partners on the state and county level to provide this data.

We do know that onDecember 1st, the statewide infection rate was 4.46%. The Mid-Hudson Region infection rate was 5.8% and Westchester County was 5.3%.

The Town of Yorktown remains in a State of Emergency.  This does not impact our schools, businesses or houses of worship.  We have doubled the littering fine again to $1,000 and Town departments have been reorganized to limit potential exposure and spread.  Town Hall continues to be accessible by appointment and masks are required at all town parks, recreational facilities and buildings.

Governor Cuomo announced yesterday that the first 170,000 vaccines from Pfizer is expected to be distributed by December 15th.  This does not mean COVID is over as experts believe the number of cases and infection rate will continue to rise through the holiday season but it does show a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel.

We all know the severity of the virus and level of spread is dictated by our collective actions.  It has been proven that the safest place for kids is our schools while small gatherings are the greatest spreaders.  Residents are urged to be smart, be considerate and be responsible.

As a reminder, I will be joined by Derek Anderson, the Executive Director of Northern Westchester Hospital, on Friday, December 4th,  at 4PM for a community update.  This can be viewed live on the Town’s Facebook page, Optimum Channel 20, Fios Channel 33 or the Town’s website.
