Fall Favorites, Anticipated

Autumn doesn’t officially arrive until Monday, but the signs are all around us. Pumpkin spiced everything and mums for sale in shops. A few vibrant patches of orange and gold leaves dotting the trees. Cooler temperatures, enabling cozy reading sessions snuggled under a warm blanket.

I am, as the kids say, here for it. Where else would I be? I live here. (*chuckles to self*)

Since autumn is my favorite season in New England, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share my responses to the Autumn Book Tag, a conversation-starter and celebration of autumn created by members of the online avid readers community.

What is your favorite thing about autumn?

No fair asking for favorites! But my top fives include: blustery days when leaves swirl through the air, red leaves, pumpkin baked goods (Stew Leonard's Pumpkin Crumb Cake is a favorite), Halloween and Thanksgiving, and cozy sweaters.

What book on your shelves reminds you of going back to school/your school days?

That would be my collection of well-worn Norton anthologies.

Find a book on your shelf which has something autumn related on the cover.

My most self-evidently autumnal book is the one in photo two: my hardcover edition of Leslie Meier’s Candy Corn Murder. It’s one in a series of murder mysteries about amateur sleuth, reporter, and mom Lucy Stone, set in a sleepy (except for all the murders) Maine town.

What is your favorite horror/Halloween story?

Cozy mysteries are about as horrifying as I can tolerate. I especially enjoy Meier’s this time of year. Autumn in New England is iconic, and Meier sets her novels during Halloween and Thanksgiving (as well as other holidays around the year).

What is your favorite horror film?

Haha, no. However, I do enjoy It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown by Charles Shultz.

Which book release are you most looking forward to this autumn?

Several, actually, but I’m especially excited for Erin Morgenstern’s The Starless Sea. The story has so many elements that speak to me, and I enjoyed her first novel, The Night Circus.

Which film release are you most looking forward to this autumn?

Harriet (Nov. 1), about the life of Harriet Tubman. She was an awe-inspiring human being. I don’t often mark film dates on my calendar and rarely see movies at the theater, but I will be doing both for this film. Check out the trailer here.

Share three books that you are hoping to read this season.

Leslie Meier has a new Lucy Stone mystery, Halloween Murder, that I hope to read. I’m also sure to inhale Tyrant’s Tomb, Rick Riordan’s fourth Trials of Apollo book, which comes out on Tuesday. I also foresee myself reading Morgenstern’s The Starless Sea immediately upon its release.

What are you most excited about/looking forward to this autumn?
