Tropical Storm literally blew through Putnam County yesterday with high winds and a lot of rain leaving thousands without electricity. The storm made landfall around 11:10 p.m. Monday night in North Carolina, quickly swept up the east coast and and struck the NYC area around 1:15 pm. bringing sustained winds in excess of 50 m.p.h. It toppled trees and power lines from southern New Jersey to Putnam County. NYSE&G estimated that approximately 32,000 customers in the Northern Westchester and Putnam County area have lost power due to the extensive damage. The company issued a statement last night that said:
“Given the degree of damage, complete restoration is expected to last multiple days in the company’s Brewster division (Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester counties). As a result, the company will announce plans for ice and bottled water distribution (on Wednesday).
The NYSE&G Outage Map showed approximately 1500 customers in Southeast were still with out power as of 7:20 this morning and approximately 9,000 in the Carmel, Kent, Pleasant Valley area. Yorktown has approximately 2,200 customers still without electricity, mostly in the business district, without power and Somers 1,000.
