CDC recommends staying home this Thanksgiving

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Thursday that people should stay home on Thanksgiving and celebrate the holiday only with members of their own households.

“You know, right now as we’re seeing exponential growth in cases and the opportunity to translocate disease or infection from one part of the country to another leads to our recommendation to avoid travel at this time,” said Dr. Henry Walke, CDC’s Covid-19 incident manager.

Walker said the agency was concerned about people’s ability to maintain proper social distancing at transportation hubs such as bus and train stations and airports

Visiting travelers and family members could bring the virus with them to events, and the CDC says roughly 30% to 40% of the people who get the virus are infected by carriers who are asymptomatic

The head of the agency’s task force for community intervention and critical population, Dr. Erin Sauber-Schatz, said that only people living under the same roof for 14 days prior to the holiday celebration should attend any gathering, a recommendation that could, by definition, exclude family members in the military or students who are away at college.

There have been more than 1 million new cases reported in the United States in the last 7 days and 141,000 new cases were reported on Thursday alone.

As cases continue to increase across the States, the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with, according the CDC Officials.
