Arbor Day Poster Contest

Arbor Day Poster Contest

This year's Arbor Day event will take place on April 26th, 2019, at 4:00 pm. We are once again conducting our very successful poster contest, which will be the highlight of the ceremony. The location will be the John C. Hart Memorial Library on Main Street in Shrub Oak, rain or shine.  Poster entries will be displayed inside the Library for the month of May.

The Town enthusiastically supports this event and we are pleased to announce that previous years’ winning poster designs will be displayed throughout Yorktown beginning in March.  Winning 2019 posters will also be made into banners and hung from streetlights in Yorktown following the ceremony. Winning posters will also be displayed in the winners’ schools in June and the Town Court lobby in July, as well as on the Town’s website.

The announcement of Poster Contest Winners will be made at the Arbor Day Ceremony.  Finalists will be notified in the week prior to the ceremony.

Arbor Day is celebrated in towns and cities across the United States, inspiring people to plant and nurture trees, which enhance and beautify their communities. Visit www.arborday.org(link is external) for information about Arbor Day and the Arbor Day Foundation.

This year’s theme is Specimen and Historic Trees. By virtue of their size, specimen trees make disproportional contributions to the ecological benefits of trees and woodlands, including provision of shade, oxygen and erosion control. Specimen trees beautify our residential and commercial neighborhoods, provide a visible link to our history and help mitigate the impacts of over browsing by deer as they are a critical resource for woodland regeneration. Yorktown is fortunate to have a number of trees of historic distinction as well as many beautiful specimen trees.
