Yorktown Chamber President’s Column September 2021

On Sunday September 12th at 430 PM the Yorktown 10u Heat will take on The Yorktown Police Department in a monumental baseball game at Woodland Legacy Fields located at 3100 Strang Blvd, Yorktown Heights NY 10598.  These feisty 10- and 11-year old’s can’t wait to get on the field and strut their stuff and show the good folks at The Yorktown Police Patrolman’s Benevolent Association what baseball is all about.

With a special guest appearance by Mickey Rivers, a two-time World Series winning New York Yankee the day promises to be both exciting and fun.  This event is the 5th of its kind as The Yorktown Police and Young Baseball enthusiasts have battled it out under the mantra “The Cops Vs The Kids” and the money has always been donated directly to Camp Sunshine located in Casco Maine.  Camp Sunshine is a retreat which assists families with children who have life threatening diseases.  It costs 2500.00 to sponsor a family for a weak of respite and hope and to date we have raised close top 45,000.00 from previous events and have sponsored countless local hyper local families.

The event started some 6 years ago when Dr Rodd Stein or Yorktown Pediatrics came to me and asked if I could help him raise money for a family who needed the help.  That blossomed intro this annual baseball fundraiser which is fun for the entire family while we are all contributing to a great cause.

The way it works is that we donate the money to Camp Sunshine and it is instantly allocated to families that The Yorktown Chamber or Yorktown Pediatrics recommends to Camp Sunshine.  The names and families are kept completely confidential and is open to anyone and everyone within our local area.  The families are treated to a weak of fun at their gorgeous facility.  They are allocated a suite to live in and everything they need is provided for.  The facility looks like an amusement park with rides, a bow and arrow range, a beautiful lake and even a zip line.  I visited there and it is simply amazing what the folks do up there.  Of course, the families we send there will be around other families who are experiencing like-minded challenges.  Camp Sunshine has doctors on staff to assist as well.

Please join us on September 12th.  There will be a live DJ, Bouncy Castles, A BBQ, plenty of Baseball and of course Mickey Rivers.  For more information visit us on Facebook @yorktownforcampsunshine and donate at https://tinyurl.com/fj9wjcdf
