This book group reads a variety of fiction and nonfiction mostly selected by participants. This is the final book of a series entitled Perspectives on Family Life led by Professor and author, Heather Ostman.
Behold The Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue details the lives of an immigrant family from Cameroon and their struggles to survive in New York. This critically acclaimed debut novel won the 2017 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and was named by The New York Times and The Washington Post as one of the notable books of 2016. It was also named the best book of 2016 by NPR, Kirkus Reviews, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The Guardian.

Book Group and Author Talk

The name says it all, for readers captivated by the study of history. It is led by our director Carolyn Reznick.
Americans tend to see the end of the war as a glorious time when everyone could go home and resume their lives. The truth was more complex. In Europe, the end of the war brought chaos, not closure, with hundreds of thousands of refugees filling the roads, hoping to return to homes that, in many cases, no longer existed. They were “the displaced, deserters, war criminals and their intended victims who had managed to resist, to escape, all walking as one limping mass through the carnage,”
Professor Nasaw has had an outstanding career as a historian and is now emeritus from CUNY. We are grateful for the generous donation of his time.
This program is open to everyone, not only those who come to the History & Biography Book Group.
