Postcard from Bermuda, An Underwater Escape

There’s great tension in the air as people are bombarded with news about the coronavirus. We rush through stores to secure groceries and stress about whether our loved ones are safe. During stressful times, I like to think back to the places I’ve visited. Today Bermuda came to mind.

It’s where pink sand beaches sparkle like a thousand tiny jewels and charming candy-colored buildings, pepper historical towns. It’s an island for swimming, sunbathing, and strolling. I was determined, however, to do something unique, something I had never done before. It was when I discovered helmet diving that I knew I found what I was looking for.

Hartley Helmet Diving

I booked a tour with Hartley Helmet Diving and they provided everything needed for a safe and interactive underwater experience. I wasn’t required to attend a class or acquire a dive certification. Participants don’t even need to know how to swim. A short boat ride and less than 2 miles from shore, I reached the diving destination.

A lightweight helmet was placed on my shoulders. Air was pumped in through a tube that was attached from my helmet to a compressor on the boat. Easing into the clear cerulean water, the sea slowly rose completely over the helmet, and yet my face and head remained completely dry!

Ten feet below, standing on the sandy sea bottom, it was as if I were in an aquarium. Colorful tropical parrotfish, blue tang, and red snapper lazily swam up and around the multi-colored sea fans, like dancers on stage.

Under the watchful eye of the tour guide, also known as the fish whisperer, a large friendly grouper came close to my helmet as if to say hello, and a Bermuda angelfish ate right out of my hand.

Being underwater was meditative and the quiet, calm waters removed me from the challenges of daily life. For that hour I was truly in the present moment and felt a connection to the incredible marine life.

In a world that is uncertain at this time, sometimes reflecting back on a place where one felt safe or experienced great beauty can provide a much-needed escape. While many of us are no doubt eager to explore the world and relax on a beach, I'm positive that travel will be on our agenda sometime again soon.
