The Town of Yorktown is closely monitoring the winter storm expected to hit our region beginning tomorrow afternoon. The Town has been in communication with Con Edison and the Westchester County Office of Emergency Management regarding preparations and expected impacts.
At this time, the Town is currently under a Winter Storm Watch. During the course of the upcoming storms we are expecting between 6-12 inches of snow along with up to a quarter-inch of ice. Additionally, gusty winds are expected to arrive Sunday afternoon and persist into Monday morning. The combination of snow and ice on trees and power lines, along with gusty winds, presents the possibility of power outages. All residents are encouraged to prepare to be without power, including taking action to avoid frozen water pipes and heating pipes. Depending on your electric utility, should a power outage occur, please notify:
Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED or online at www.coned.com(link is external). Con Edison encourages customers to sign up for text alerts. You can use your cell phone to text REG to OUTAGE (688243) and follow the prompts. They will need your account number and you will have to confirm your zip code. Your account number is on your bill. Once you have entered this information Con Edison stated thereafter you will not need to enter your account number.
For NYSEG customers please either call (800) 572-1131 or at http://www.nyseg.com/Outages/outageinformation.html(link is external)
There is also very cold weather expected following the storm. Temperatures Sunday night are expected to drop to 0-5 degrees with wind chills as low as -20 degrees. Should areas of the Town lose power, the Town is prepared to open the Albert A. Capellini Community & Cultural Center as a shelter after the storm has safely passed and power is still out.
It is suggested that residents sign up for Nixle, a text messaging system that will alert residents as to closed roads and other storm related information. You can sign up using your cell phone by texting 888777 and input in the message block your 5 digit zipcode. After you send this text message you will get updated information on road closings and other storm related events.
