Jefferson Valley Mall is an Emergency Cooling Station and Local Road Closures in Yorktown

The Jefferson Valley Mall will host an emergency cooling and charging center at its food court today until 7 p.m.

The mall, in coordination with Yorktown officials, is making the service available in response to yesterday’s tropical storm that downed trees and left more than 60 percent of Yorktown without power as of Wednesday afternoon.

Visitors to the mall must wear masks at all times and socializing is not allowed.

“The Jefferson Valley Mall is a great neighbor and once again the mall’s leadership has extended a helping hand to Yorktown residents who need to keep cool or power their devices,” said Supervisor Matt Slater. “I hope anyone who visits the mall will respect their rules, which are designed to protect their staff and the public.”

Virtually all the town’s municipal buildings lack power. Currently the town has 18 generators used to power traffic signals in high traffic areas.

Fallen trees and wires have closed many streets, including:
Old Crompond Road
Stony Street
Parts of Lexington Avenue
Parts of Baptist Church Road
Routes 118, 100 and 132
Quinlan Street
Illington Road
Crow Hill Road

A full list of street closures and outage updates are posted on the town’s Facebook page.

Town officials are working on procuring dry ice and bottled water to distribute on Thursday. The distribution site will be announced on the town’s Facebook page.
