Westchester Weekend Guide October 24-26

This week after some weird and wild weather ranging from balmy sunny days to freezing rainy and blustery days, we have finally arrived at the weekend.  And the weather looks PERFECT! Rye Brook is especially excited for the weekend because our much anticipated Fall Fest is finally upon us! You won’t want to miss this activity right here at our elementary school on Ridge Street!  Other than the Fall Fest, which is a “must do activity” HamletHub has lots of fun activities to fill up the weekend and ensure everyone has a great time with their friends and family!

Fall Tot Shabbat at KTI

This is a wonderful way to welcome in Shabbat and the weekend with family and friends at KTI (575 King Street).  Everyone is welcome to join in the celebration which is geared towards younger families.  Enjoy some Challah, fruit and wine in the sanctuary after hearing some adorable singing from the KTI ECP students.  All are welcome but please rsvp to KTIECP@gmail.com.  Shabbat will take place on Friday, October 24th from 6-7pm.

Wee Zee World Halloween Party

On Friday, Oct 24th from 4-8pm, head to Wee Zee World for their Halloween Party! The main event will take place from 6-8pm, while “Peek A Boo” (for kids under 5) is from 4-6pm. There will also be “Trunk to Trunk” Trick or Treating, tailgate style, in the parking lot from 4-6pm.  Kids will be able to enjoy a Haunted house, spooky games, DJ, Lazer Light Show, Costume Contest, Dance Party, and more! Cross County Center Halloween Spooktacular

Also on Friday, October 24, from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM, the Cross County Shopping Center in Yonkers will be holding their annual Halloween Event.  Kids will be able to enjoy free activities including a magic show, costume contest, trick or treating and much more!  The event will take place on The Green, in the center of the mall.  While the event is FREE you MUST RSVP so we can be sure to have enough supplies on hand for all guests! Blind Brook Fall Fest

This is definitely HamletHub’s pick for what to do this weekend!!! The Fall Fest will be from 12 pm - 4 pm on Saturday, October 25th at the BMP Ridge Street elementary school in Rye Brook. Cost is $20 for kids ages 2-11 / Adults free or $5 suggested donation. The day promises to be jam-packed with fun-filled activities. Some highlights include:

Rye Nature Center

RNC will be holding their Ecology Club for Families with Special Needs on Saturday, October 25th  at 9:30 am.  Children with special needs are invited to bring a family member with them to the Nature Center and enjoy animal programs, hikes, and other fun science and sensory adventures. Also on Saturday at the RNC, don’t miss “Ghost Stories by the Campfire” at 6pm.  Bring a flashlight, hot dogs, and your courage. You’ll need them as your listen to stories and poems about Westchester’s haunted forest, houses, and caves. Stories progress from spooky to scary – you can discretely retreat when they pass your comfort level. Marshmallows provided. $8.00/family members, $10.00/family non-members. Osborne School Scare Fair

In neighboring Rye, on Saturday, October 25th from 10-3:30, the Osborne elementary school will be having their yearly scare fair.  Located at 10 Osborn Road in Rye, NY, this year’s fair will feature a new Euro Bungee (a hybrid bungee jump trampoline), the Ultimate Survivor zip line inflatable, a bouncy house, a trackless train, a photo booth, cake walk and lots of games!

Ridge Hill Fall Fest

Another site for Fall Family Fun this weekend is Westchester’s Ridge Hill.  They will be celebrating Autumn with their 2nd annual HarvestFest 2014 on Saturday, October 25th, from 12-4pm.  Kids are invited to get their ghoul on and show off their costumes with center-wide trick-or-treating and enjoy a host of other fun, interactive activities like arts & crafts, drum circle, pony rides, petting zoo, pumpkin decorating & costume makeup!  In addition, Ridge Hill artist-in-residence Kindo will be creating free, custom designed t-shirts, and chalking a community Harvest Mural with the help of kids in attendance.   For more info, click here

Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones museum is an amazing place for the kids.  Located about 20 minutes north of Rye Brook, in Norwalk, CT, its perfect for the whole family! This weekend, in addition to the regular museum that you can walk around on your own schedule, there are the following planned activities:

On Saturday from 10:45 - 11:15AM come to Mutt-i-grees!  Enjoy a special canine storytime and discussion followed by a visit from a shelter dog. Shelter dogs courtesy of P.A.W.S.  Free with museum admission. For children ages 4 and older. Children under 4 can meet the visiting dog at 11:05.

On Saturday from 2-2:30, don’t miss the “Around the World: Performance Series” focusing this week on Ethiopia.

The Catskill Puppet Theater will put on a production of The Lion’s Whiskers, an Ethiopian folktale. Enjoy live actors, puppets and masks in this musical production about family, love, and courage. This fully-staged musical puppet show is not to be missed!

Ages 2 and up. Free with museum admission, but tickets required from the Welcome Desk. Limited seating on a first-come, first-served basis.

And what sounds like a super fun activity to wrap up Saturday, October 25th, from
6:00 – 8:30 pm is the 10th Annual Halloween Event!  This Superhero Halloween Party is filled with tricks and treats, Halloween themed crafts for the whole family to enjoy. Dress up as your favorite hero or heroine and join our costume party and parade!  Kids will be able to have tons of fun in the Gadget Garage where they can make belts, brackets and create an origin story and alter ego. They will also be able to go on a scavenger hunt, play hero-themed games and more!

And to wrap up the weekend at Stepping Stones, on Sunday, October 26th from 1:30-2:30, come to the ART of Fairy Tales- The Teeny Tiny Woman. Listen to a classic fairy tale and re-create your favorite scene through a special art project.

Limited to 12 participants on a first come, first served basis. Free with museum admission, but you must pick up tickets at the Welcome Desk. For children ages 5 and older.

Crafts at Michaels

Every Saturday, Michael’s offers a Craft for the kids from 10-12.  This weekend Celebrate Halloween with Michaels. Enjoy crafting treat bags, sharing candy, having your face painted and participating in a spooktacular Halloween parade. Stop by for our Happy Halloween Craft Event. $2 fee includes supplies.

Crafts at Lakeshore

Scared by the Sound

2014 marks the 15th consecutive year of Scared by the Sound Haunted House and also their return to Historic Playland Amusement Park. With their original location by the Long Island Sound completely refurbished, the only things left churned up by Hurricane Sandy are the surviving scary creatures still lurking and awaiting you! Come experience for yourself Crypt Walk, The Haunted Wine Cellar, Creepy Morgue, Tunnels of Doom plus some all new scenes. In addition, don't forget to try and test your survival skills in the all new outdoor Black Out Maze. Parking is free. Amusement Park Rides Are Not Open for this Event. Spooky Fall Adventures At the NY Botanical Gardens

Bring your whole family to enjoy this exciting annual tradition at the Garden. Kidgits Spooktacular Halloween

On Saturday, October 25th from 11:30am-1pm on the Food Court - Retail Level 4 (at The Westchester in White Plains) “Halloween is here and Simon Malls is inviting all little ghouls, goblins and boo'tiful princesses to come have a spooktacular time at the Kidgits Halloween event. Kidgits is teaming up with Captain McFinn to recognize October as Bully Prevention Month. A free app called The Bully Free zone will be available for download and you could win a free iPadAir. You won't want to miss all of the fun activities and giveaway!”

Tarrytown Halloween Parade

Love a good Halloween Parade? And honestly, who doesn’t?! Then you won’t want to miss the 13th annual Village of Tarrytown Halloween Parade, complete with floats!  This event is on Saturday, October 25th at 5:30pm!  There will be a block party, DJ, dining on the street and live performances! Muscoot

Muscoot Farm in Somers is also getting in the Halloween spirit! On Saturday, October 25th from 1-3pm, join them on a “Boo Walk.” Come dressed in your Halloween costume and see if you can find all of the items on their Halloween-themed scavenger hunt list. Sounds like fun!

Stone Barns Center

-Egg Collecting

At Stone Barns, and for the younger clientele (ages 4 & up), "Step into the shoes of a farmer and pitch in with the all-important job of collecting eggs. Head out to the egg-mobiles (mobile hen houses), learn how our hens enjoy pasture-based lives and take home a half-dozen farm-fresh eggs.

Important: All participants must wear closed-toed shoes and long pants for this program. Youth must be accompanied by at least one ticketed adult, and all people attending the program must buy a ticket. Each family or group takes home a half-dozen eggs."

There are two times available this weekend on Saturday October 25th from 11-11:45 and 12-12:45 (the Sunday time is sold out already!)  Since tickets for this do sell out, be sure to get your tickets in advance.   Prices are as follows: Member adult $10.80, adult $12.00, member youth $10.80, youth $12.00.

On Saturday October 25th (12:30-1:15 and 1:30-2:15) or Sunday October 26th (12:30-1:15) you can join in on a family-friendly tour for ages 4 and up.  Explore the farm and some of their favorite seasonal highlights. Join them for a walk around the farm to take a closer look at the animals that they’re raising and the vegetables that they’re growing! 

Please note that all youth must be accompanied by a ticketed adult.   Ticket prices are as follows: member adult $9.00, adult $10.00, member youth $9.00, youth $10.00.

Rye Library Preschool Storytime

On Saturday October 25th, from 11-12, children ages 3 1/2 & up, and their caregivers can listen to age-appropriate stories and participate in fun games, rhymes and other activities to develop pre-literacy skills and an interest in books and reading.  Felt boards and other props are sometimes used to enhance stories and model future classroom experience.  A fun craft project is designed around the Story Time's theme or a seasonal topic.  Parents and caregivers are asked to assist younger children using scissors, glue and other art materials.  60 minutes. Stew Leonard’s in Yonkers

-Halloween Trick or Treat Breakfast with Stew’s Characters

On Saturday, October 25, 2014, Stew Leonard’s in Yonkers will host a Halloween breakfast with their most beloved costumed characters including Wow the Cow! The farm-fresh menu will feature pancakes, bacon, eggs, home fries, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea. There are two seating times (9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.). Adult tickets cost $12.95/each and children age 12 and under are $9.95/each. Tickets went on sale Wednesday, October 1, 2014 on a first come, first served basis.

-Pumpkin Carving Demo

Pumpkin carver Lenny Calvin will be at the store on Sunday, October 26 to bewitch shoppers with his elaborate Halloween-themed etchings on the store’s pumpkins.

The carving will take place from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. in the Garden Shop for customers to see and enjoy as they pick out their own pumpkins. The carver will use knives, chisels, and X-Acto knives to create a spooky scene on the pumpkin.

JRDF Walk

On Sunday, October 26, 2014, at 10am (check in is 9am) many people affected either directly or indirectly by Juvenile Diabetes will be walking about 3 miles to show their support for the millions of people affected by this disease.  The JDRF Walk is an impactful way to raise money for critically needed type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.  There will be music, kids’ activities, and plenty of family fun.  The walk will take place at Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway

Window Painting at the Rye Ridge Shopping Center

First come, first served, so be sure to get there early!  This event will take place on Sunday, October 26th at 10am for Grades K-6 only.  Registration is on the upper level by Rye Ridge Deli and Sportech from 9:30-10:30.  Don't forget to bring your bucket, water, brushes, poster paint (water based), tape, rags, drop cloth, newspaper and a step stool!  Such a fun way to get into the Halloween spirit, have your child express their creativity and show off their skills!!

Superheroes at Maritime Aquarium

Have any superhero fans in the family? If so, you will definitely want to check out this fun event on Sunday, Oct. 26th from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT.  Kids can meet the famous Spider-Man and Captain America LIVE and in person, and pose with them for photos! Greenburgh Nature Center

The Greenburgh Nature Center (GNC) always has so much fun in store for us every weekend! And this weekend is no exception! On Sunday, October 26th from 11-3pm, you won’t want to miss the Scarecrows & Pumpkins Parade.  This is a fun Halloween event for young children. Follow friendly scarecrows along the pumpkin trail and meet storybook characters along the way. Come in costume and enjoy cider, treats, tattoos, and more. Fee if pre-registered by Oct. 25: Members $5 per person, Non-members $10 per person, Children under 2 free (on-line registration only). The Magic Garden at The Emelin Theatre

Stamford Nature Center

This weekend why not head up the Merritt Parkway to the amazing Stamford Nature Center.  Aside for its usual attractions including animals, trails and a fun playground, this Sunday, October 26th from 1-3pm, the kids will be able to Trick or Treat on Heckscher Farm.  Kids can wear their Halloween costume and trick or treat with their favorite farm friends! Make your first stop at the otter pond to collect a bag and get your first Clue! Follow the clues to find the five "trick or treat" stations.

Then, stop by Overbrook for "Ick-Fest" to get slimy with their slime table, visit live reptiles and bugs, and create crafts around some of our favorite Halloween critters. Don't forget your treat bag!

Scarecrow Festival

Who doesn’t love checking out all the creative and fun scarecrows?!  Starting Saturday, October 18, and running through Saturday, October 25, scarecrows of all shapes and sizes will take over the front lawn of the library, located at 121 Larchmont Ave!  The 4th Annual Larchmont Scarecrow Festival is a MUST SEE event! 

Sam Bridge Nursery Fall Activities

Scarecrow Building- Join Sam Bridge Nursery in Greenwich for their 15th Annual Build-A-Scarecrow Workshop! Anytime between 10am & 2pm Oct. 25th. $35 per scarecrow.

You bring a long sleeve shirt, long pants and any accessories you may want to add. They provide the frame, head, hair, face pieces, stuffing and place to make a mess.

Get creative!! After each workshop, a winner will be chosen. The winners from each workshop will be entered to win a grand prize at the end of the month. So fun!!!

Boo at the Zoo

My kids and I absolutely love Halloween and everything to do with it! Boo at the Zoo is no exception.  It’s so much fun!! Weekends at the Bronx zoo, including Halloween, will feature hay mazes, costume parades, musical theater, magic, and more. Visit bats, owls, vultures and other winged icons of Halloween, then embark on a trip back in time as you ride their Dinosaur Safari! Weekends until Nov 2.  You can save $5 off tickets when you purchase them ahead of time online.

Apple and Pumpkin Picking

If you haven’t gone apple picking yet, this may be your last chance.  Some orchards are done for the season already because of a lighter than usual apple crop. Don’t miss out on your chance to apple pick- it’s one of the best parts of fall!  Below are some of my favorite orchards and activities that are happening this weekend.  A great activity for the whole family to enjoy together!

At Barton’s this weekend, October 25th and 26th there will be Free Admission for those in FULL costume as well as a parade and prizes each day!

Every weekend in October and November, from 9-6pm the cost is $3 entry to the Farm (includes hayrides, live music, animals, kiddie hay maze, pumpkin slide). Add on a Fun Pass "if you dare" for Corn Maze, Haunted House & Fun Park!  Drink Shack, Donut Hut, 2 Kitchens & more.. Don’t miss Haunt Night! Saturday, October 18th. From dusk until 10pm. Get scared in live Haunted Maze & Haunted House for $10.  On the Weekends Barton's runs Full Attractions, Music & Picking. Fun Pass $9.50. plus Admission to Farm $3. 

At Harvest Moon unfortunately their apple trees have been picked clean L (there are apples in bins that you can fill up the bags with.) And this weekend will be the last Fall Festival this season from 10-5!  There will be live music, hayrides, pumpkins, apple cannons, bounce house, pony rides, face painting, farm animals, food vendors and BBQ food! $3 admission, Special $6 Fun Pass!  Live Music, Demos, Games, Corn Maze. Garden Specials for PYO & Apple Bags. Come Pick & Play! 

Other orchards worth mentioning are  Dr. Davie's Farm, Stuart Farms, and Wilken's.  At Silverman’s in CT, pick your own apples has ended but weekend scenic tractor rides have started!  Enjoy a 50 mile view of the countryside from one of the highest points in Southern Connecticut
.

Outhouse Orchards  is also out of apples for picking off of the trees this 2014 season. There are apples available for purchase at the store as well as out of pre-picked bins.  Their cornmaze and pumpkin patch will be open throughout Halloween. So come on down for some cider and take a stroll around the farm.

Westmoreland Sanctuary

Two fun events are scheduled at Westmoreland this weekend that you should definitely check out!

Saturday, October 25 - Cidermaking  at 1:00pm-A favorite fall pastime is the making of apple cider.  Participants will help with the grinding, pressing, and drinking.  You haven’t tasted cider until you try this unpasteurized freshly made golden liquid! $5 per person for non-members and free for members.

Sunday, October 26 - Breakfast with the Hawks from 9:00am - 12:00pm-There are different bird of prey species seen in the latter days of fall than at the beginning. Witness the annual fall migration of birds of prey from the Chestnut Ridge Hawkwatch.  Bring binoculars to help you see some of these avian predators as they use different energy conservation strategies to fly hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles to their wintering habitats.  Ages 6 and up recommended. $5 per person for non-members and free for members.  For more info on either event click here

Big Apple Circus

If you’re in the mood to head to the city, this is a favorite activity with kids and adults alike! The circus will be in town from Oct 17th-Jan 11th at the Lincoln Center.  For tickets or more info, click here! 

Greenwich Beaches

The beaches in Greenwich are open year round, but Park/Beach Passes are required from May 1 to October 31.  Click here to learn more 

Ice Skating

Always a fun activity for the entire family, Playland Skating rink is open again (yay), following a devastating blow thanks to Hurricane Sandy! Visit their website for more info!
