Senators Harckham & Mayer To Hold Food Drive in Bedford

New York State Senators Shelley Mayer and Pete Harckham will be holding a food drive from 12 p.m. (noon) to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 25 in the parking lot of Fox Lane Middle School, 632 South Bedford Road, Bedford, NY.

“The Coronavirus Pandemic has had devastating economic effects throughout my district,” said Mayer. “Vulnerable populations are struggling to meet basic needs due to unemployment or loss of income. I am glad to partner with my colleague Senator Pete Harckham for this food drive to help local food pantries who are working hard to keep up with the increased demand.”

“Food insecurity and hunger are still prevalent in our communities while we work to bounce back from the economic problems caused by the coronavirus pandemic,” said Harckham. “But through our shared efforts, we can make a difference. So, please stop in Bedford on July 25 with some shelf-stable food and know your generosity is much appreciated.”

Along with members of their teams and a group of volunteers, Mayer and Harckham will be collecting food that will be donated to the Community Center of Northern Westchester and the Antioch Baptist Church of Bedford Hills. The Bedford Teachers Association is partnering in the event as well and will be supplying volunteers.

Harckham has held five food drives in the past few weeks—one each in Sleepy Hollow, Peekskill, Mount Kisco, Mohegan Lake and Brewster—and collected about 30,000 pounds of food items and over $9,500 in cash donations so far. Hundreds of residents from the 40th Senate District have volunteered to help at the food drives as well—“a real grassroots show of support,” said Harckham.

Please note: This will be a “Drive-Thru, Drop Off” event. No food will be distributed; it will only be collected. Volunteers wearing face masks will collect the food from the car. There is no need to get out of the vehicle.
