South Salem resident Mary Whalen, 77, former Lewisboro Garden Club member, has died

Mary F. Whalen of South Salem, New York, passed away on November 22, 2023, at the age of 77.

She was born in Port Chester, N.Y. on April 19, 1946, to Grace T. and Richard D. Scarfone. Shortly after graduating from Port Chester High School, she worked for National Bank of Westchester in White Plains as a teller where she met her husband, Richard, who was a drive-thru customer.

But her most important job was as matriarch of the Whalen household. Family was the centerpiece of Mary’s life, as were the values she instilled in raising her sons and spreading love to her grandchildren. Spending holiday time with family was also important, especially with sister Pat, and nephew Brent (and Nafis and daughter Madelyne) of East Fishkill, N.Y.

Mary’s passions included nature, gardening and cultivating and arranging flowers. For many years she was a member of the Lewisboro Garden Club. She also became a passionate fan of Muhlenberg College football, where grandson Cody is a current wide receiver.

Mary is survived by her husband, Richard, of South Salem, N.Y., and her sons J.R. of New York, N.Y.; and Sean (and Stephanie and daughter Olivia) as well as her grandchildren, Cody and Skylar, of Jericho, N.Y.

Family and friends will be received on Monday, November 27, 2023, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Kane Funeral Home; 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Church; 55 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield. Interment will take place privately.
