Wilton Letter: A Vote for Shaner and Priest Is a Vote for Sunlight and Accountability

Wilton could be described as a school system with a town government attached to it. In the past, as long as student performance remained high, the school administration could do as they pleased with little public oversight. But gradually administrative costs increased even as student test scores stagnated.

To correct this, politically unaffiliated parents have run for the Board of Education in recent elections. But instead of being applauded for stepping up and performing their civic duty, these parents have been subjected to organized harassment from partisans who resent parental “interference.”  That concerted effort is on display again in this election.

Why would anyone be afraid of transparency at the Board of Education?  And importantly, how can we expect good people to run for office if the risk is public humiliation?

Next month, we all get to have over voices heard. It’s our opportunity as citizens to question the administration and ask why are only 65% of our students proficient in math.[1] Obviously, we can be much better.

I’m voting for Mark Shaner and Heather Priest because a vote for Shaner and Priest is a vote for sunlight and accountability.
